Emerald Shine Bevy

emerald drinkIt’s spirulina that makes this drink shine!

Never heard of it?

Spirulina is a type of algae that is high in protein, chlorophyll and GLA. It is ideal for people in recovery (like athletes),  those suffering from weakness (healing from disease) and for those with digestive issues like poor assimilation – and that’s because it`s nutrients are super easy to digest and absorb.

What makes it a ‘kitchen medicine’?

Spirulina can be consumed as a nourishing food, or you can use it as part of your ‘food as medicine’ natural healing protocol to recover from disease.

Here are just some of the ways you can use spirulina to heal:

√ increases mental capacity
√ detoxifies the liver and kidneys
√ balances blood sugar
√ builds the blood
√ enhances intestinal flora
√ inhibits the growth of yeast, fungi and bacteria (yet contraindicated for those with signs of coldness accompanied by water retention or other forms of dampness – mucous, yeasts, cysts, et.)

Note: Because it has a slightly cooling effect on the body, if you are hypo thyroid or otherwise cold all the time, you should consider chlorella instead, as it is the least cooling of the algae’s.

Dosage: Take 2 tsp per day for extra nourishment (has a whopping 5.7 grams of protein, 225 g EFA’s and up to 55% of the RDA of iron – that is A LOT for 2 tsp of something!) or  take 4 tsp daily as medicine.

Why hemp oil?

While hemp oil deserves it’s own article, I will briefly touch on why I use it instead of flax oil (another popular vegetarian essential fatty acid supplement). Flax oil can only be used therapeutically to restore a deficiency of Omega 3. Unfortunately, taking flax oil exclusively for too long (in as little as 10-16 months) will eventually cause Omega 6 deficiency syptoms like flaky skin for example.

On a side note,  you may be tempted to think that the standard north american diet is already so high in Omega 6 that one doesn’t have to worry about that. But here is why you do. You could be eating tons of processed refined Omega 6 vegetable oils (and foods containing them) and still have an Omega 6 deficiency.

That’s because your body is still waiting for the real Omega 6′s to enter the room (so to speak), while your poor liver is left to deal with the toxicity of the damaged oils you’ve consumed in it’s place. And ‘it’ is sad that it has to build your body with poor quality fats, instead of robust healthy ones! I am not saying flax is bad, I am saying it’s medicine, so it should be used wisely.

Hemp oil on the other hand, can be used over the long term to rebuild and maintain EFA status, because it naturally contains Omega 6 and Omega 3 in balance….and like spirulina, it contains GLA (flax doesn’t)!

Why is GLA so special?

Besides hemp and spirulina, the only other place you can get GLA is from mother’s milk, primrose oil and borage oil. Primrose and borage oil don’t have any Omega 3 though, so again these supplements shouldn’t be taken long term as food (they should also be considered medicine).

GLA’s medicinal  super power lies in it’s ability convert in the body to DGLA which reduces inflammation (inflammation is what underlies most chronic and degenerative disease).

Here are some of the conditions that GLA has been shown to help…
√ Diabetic retinopathy
√ Rheumatoid Arthritis
√ Allergies
√ Breast cancer
√ Eczema
√ Acne
√ High Blood Pressure
√ Menopause

The trouble though, with both spirulina and hemp (in my opinion) is that they taste like crap.

But at the same time, once my body gets a taste of them, I start to crave them!

Sure I could plug my nose and swig them back, but that isn’t any fun (I have a strong gag reflex)!

So I set out to find a way to hide them both in the same drink….and that is how this Emerald Shine Bevy was born!

If you’ve been trying to figure out how to regularly consume spirulina (besides hiding it in a smoothie), then you are in the right place!

This recipe is perfect for bodies that love spirulina and hemp oil, with taste buds that don’t.

There will be no gross aftertaste of either. I promise. This one’s even kid tested and approved (puppy wants some too)!!
